Welcome

The Refuge is located in King Salmon about 300 miles southwest of Anchorage. The office is located in a modern two story facility by the Naknek River.

Becharof Refuge lies between Katmai National Park and Preserve and Alaska Peninsula National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge’s approximately 1,157,000 acres include of rolling tundra, towering mountain peaks and wave-battered coastline. The refuge is dominated by Becharof Lake, the second largest lake in Alaska. The lake covers one-fourth of the refuge and is surrounded by low rolling hills, tundra wetlands, and volcanic peaks.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service protects and manages the Becharof Refuge to conserve fish & wildlife populations and their habitats, with special emphasis on brown bears, caribou, marine mammals, migratory birds, raptors and salmon.


Driving Directions

Regularly scheduled commercial flights are available between King Salmon and Anchorage. The refuge office is located approximately 1/8 mile from the King Salmon Airport. Directions and assistance can be obtained from the interagency visitor center which is adjacent to the airport terminal.
